I'd been hoping to get some photography in during the last week or so but didn't really. But finding my neighbors, the Axelrods, home on New Years eve and [info]trillian_stars off figure skating, I jumped at the opportunity to stop slacking for an hour. [info]pjschnyder had me thinking about Little Red Riding Hood already and when J.R. showed up in a red dress, getting the wolf suit out of the closet seemed obvious.

Who knows what my neighbors think of me, tromping around the yard with body parts and wolves.

LJ gave me, (an every other paid/permanent account holder) ten half-off coupons for an lj paid account.

Here's how it works:

* You need to be a basic or plus user.
* The coupon will let you upgrade for one year for $9.95 if
you enroll in the automatic payment plan (like I'm going to be
a member from now on, bill me every year)

OR

* You can upgrade to a one year paid account for $15

(Normally the automatic-payment accounts are $19.95 and the one year plans are $25)

SO:

First ten people who respond to this post and ask for an upgrade coupon get one.

ALSO: If you're a paid/permanent account holder and you still have invites to give away please feel free to follow up in this post that you have extras.

(If you don't know if you have coupons to give away or know nothing about this, Instructions & info are Here in this news post.)

Inre the big lj-advisory post -- I still have questions about two of the items, and the u.s. staff is on vacation till next week, so I'm holding off on the post until I get some clarification.

happy new year folks.

(also -- if you're one of those etsy people who sell greeting cards or you work for a container importer, i'm looking for a source for hinged-lid (or something else clever and cool) card boxes in bulk (about A6 size and in quantities of ~500) something like this would be awesome. Drop me a line, there's a reward if you know of the right source.)

For ten years now, starting in 1999, I've taken a self portrait at midnight on new years eve -- the exposure starts one second before midnight and continues one second after midnight -- in there somewhere is the invisible change from the old year to the new and me a little older.

Here we are -- December 31, 2009 - January 1, 2010

Cold Spring

This is the "harbor" at Cold Spring. Its a small alcove in the Hudson where you can launch a canoe or other small pleasure boat into the river. One of the things that people forget about the Hudson is that its technically a tidal estuary up until it hits the dam at Troy, just north of Albany. When the tide goes out it can drain the water out of the shallows exposing expanses of mud. Unless its winter. Then the water freezes overnight creating a sheet of solid ice which the rising tide slowly cracks.

Its really fucking neat.

...

I mention this to console myself for a realization brought up by my math skills. Tomorrow morning at noon is the annual Polar Bear Club's dip at Coney Island. Since my last two NYE's were sober I had no problem getting on the subway by 10 or so to make it for the pre-game.

Polar Bear Swim, Coney Island Polar Bear, Coney Island

How could I pass up this kind of photo opportunity?

Well, I live in Beacon a mile and a half from the train. To get to Coney Island I must:

Walk to station :30
Train to Grand Central 1:20
Walk to Times Square :15
Wait for Q :5-15
Q to 7th Ave (my old stop) :20-30
7th Ave to Coney Island :30-45

So about 3 1/2 hours assuming that there aren't any delays and the train doesn't get stuck on the Manhattan Bridge as its wont to do or get hung up somewhere in Deepest Darkest Brooklyn. There's been rain and snow so it will not be a smooth trip. I would really need to be on the 7:57 train out of Beacon to make it in time. The real action is before as the actual plunge only lasts 5 minutes. People run in and they run right the fuck back out.

Tonight I'm feeling really far away.

In 2000 I was living in Greenpoint. New Year's Eve was spent in Bushwick with a bottle of very expensive champagne and a woman I haven't spoken with for eight years now. Tonight I'm drinking Campari in a quiet apartment in a quiet town 81 miles away from the end of Brooklyn. Its been a long decade between 24 and 34. Change is something I'm incredibly grateful for.

In 2000 I worked 60-70 weeks for a bunch of assholes because I didn't know any better, had no self confidence, and didn't know what to do with myself.

In 2010 I find myself needing to step back from chasing too many Things To Do. Life is far more interesting, its far more frustrating, and its totally worth it.

Tomorrow I'll get up at 7:00 to inject my oldest cat with her morning dose of insulin and put the kettle on. I think I'll make myself an omelet and then walk to the train station. I'll take the train 8 minutes to Cold Spring and walk south from the station to try to find a way out to a pine tree leaning over Foundry Cove that I always see from the train as I go rushing by in the mornings. Or I won't.

Maybe next year when Pooka's diabetes is stabilized enough for me to leave her for a day or two I'll get a room in Brooklyn and make it out to Coney Island in time. This year I have a cat I've been with for nearly 13 years to look after. This decade instead of being frustrated about what I can't do, I want to be interested by what I can do.

1) Had a meeting with LJ yesterday I'll type up my notes over the weekend for a progress report.

2) Since we got an enclosed back porch Roswell and Safetypin have taken up some sort of self-imposed guard duty that involves caterwauling to be let out every morning to they can check on the status of a) the bird invasion and b) whether or not that fiendish grey stray is walking through the yard (he's a rebel, I think they're secretly in love with him.) Well, since the snow fell this has been replace by c) complaining that we've opened the wrong door, they want the one without the snow please.

Finally yesterday Safetypin mustered up the nerve and went out for about 60 seconds, decided she didn't like the snow and came back in. Half an hour later Roswell worked up the nerve and walked out. The snow -- so fascinating! It must be examined!

After some time she did what any sentient, self-aware being would do and decided to use this medium for art -- to construct a cat of snow that would explain her view of the world, her emotions, her turmoil, her essence. After she constructed her art piece, she came back in -- satisfied, but a bit aloof after her triumph. We're having showings at 5:00 and 7:00 every night until it melts, with wine and cheese and cat treats.

Here is Roswell's snow sculpture:

I think it's beautiful. I'm going to get her a beret for Xmas.
